Delhi, India – As the air quality in Delhi deteriorated to the ‘Severe’ category, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena called a meeting of officials at his residence, Raj Niwas, to address the escalating air pollution crisis. In attendance was Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai, who discussed the increasing air pollution challenges facing the city.

Emphasis on Strict Implementation of Pollution Control Measures

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held to ensure the strict implementation of pollution control measures. A significant focus was placed on urging senior officials who had missed previous meetings to actively participate, cooperate, and work diligently to ensure that the decisions made are effectively implemented on the ground.

Appeal to Take Action Against DPCC Chairman

Delhi’s Environment Minister emphasized the urgent need to address the closure of smog towers and the Real-Time Source Apportionment System by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) chairman, actions taken without any cabinet decision. There was a call to take action against the DPCC chairman for these decisions, and the importance of collaboration with neighboring states to combat air pollution was underscored.

NGT Issues Notice to States with Poor Air Quality

Simultaneously, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued a notice to the Chief Secretaries of the states where the Air Quality Index (AQI) had plummeted to severe, very poor, and poor categories, including Delhi. The states were directed to take immediate remedial action and submit an action taken report to the Tribunal. The NGT emphasized the urgency of these measures, recognizing the serious air quality conditions in various cities and the need for swift action to prevent and control air pollution, ensuring better air quality for residents.

Severe Air Quality Conditions Grip Delhi

The air quality in the national capital took a turn for the worse, with Mundka recording the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) at 498. A thick haze enveloped the skyline of Delhi and its adjoining areas, with multiple locations registering AQI levels exceeding 400. This alarming situation underscores the pressing need for concerted efforts to combat air pollution and safeguard the health and well-being of the city’s residents.
