Defence Minister Suggests Potential Repeal of AFSPA in Kashmir
In a notable announcement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hinted at the possibility of lifting the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Kashmir. However, he underscored that the final decision rests with the Union Home Ministry.
AFSPA, granting extensive powers to armed forces personnel, has been a contentious issue in the region, allowing for search, arrest, and use of force to maintain public order.
Singh’s remarks follow similar sentiments expressed by Home Minister Amit Shah, who indicated openness to revoking AFSPA during an interview with the JK Media Group.
The Act, introduced in the 1990s amid widespread disturbances, has been a subject of debate regarding human rights violations and the need for its continuation.
Moreover, Shah outlined plans for a phased withdrawal of troops from the union territory, with a focus on empowering the local police force to maintain law and order effectively. This approach signals a shift towards greater reliance on local authorities for security operations in the region.
