Deep Freeze Grips Kashmir: Fog Disrupts Flights, Schools Urged to Close
The cold wave in Kashmir has strengthened as temperatures plunged below freezing, causing disruptions at the Srinagar international airport due to dense fog. On Monday night, Shopian in south Kashmir registered the lowest temperature in the valley at minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar city recorded a low of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, it marked the coldest night across many places in the valley, including Srinagar city.
Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, reported a low of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, and the Gulmarg ski resort noted a minimum temperature of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, experienced a low of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Pulwama recorded minus 2.7 degrees Celsius. The significant drop in minimum temperatures has prompted calls for the closure of schools, particularly for primary classes. In response, the Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir issued a statement on Monday urging the administration to declare winter vacations for lower classes.
