Crescent Sighted in Saudi Arabia, Ramadan 1445/2024 Commences Tomorrow

Saudi Arabia has officially confirmed that Monday marks the commencement of Ramadan, following the sighting of the crescent moon. The announcement was made by Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court on March 10, 2024, at 12:49, as reported by Khitam Al Amir, Chief News Editor.

In parallel, Qatar has also declared Monday as the first day of Ramadan, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s announcement. However, the Sultanate of Oman has specified Tuesday, March 12, as the beginning of the holy month, citing the unconfirmed sighting of the crescent.

Australia, known for its early announcements due to its geographical position, officially declared Monday as the last day of Sha’ban, with Tuesday, March 12, marked as the first day of Ramadan. The Grand Mufti of Australia, in collaboration with various religious councils, confirmed this based on moon observations.

Brunei has similarly designated Tuesday, March 12, as the first day of Ramadan due to challenges in sighting the crescent moon from various locations. Malaysia concurred, emphasizing the impossibility of observing the Ramadan crescent, setting Tuesday, March 12, as the official start.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs announced Tuesday as the first day of Ramadan, with Monday being 30 Shaaban. The crescent moon remained unobserved at all observation points in Indonesia.

In Singapore, Mufti Dr. Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, relying on astronomical calculations, declared that the crescent for Ramadan is unlikely to be seen above Singapore’s horizon on Sunday evening. Consequently, he announced Tuesday, March 12, as the first day of fasting.

GMA News reported that the Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta’ (BDI) in the Philippines declared Ramadan to start on Tuesday, March 12, due to the absence of moon sighting on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, in the Arab world, moon-sighting committees are scheduled to convene after the Maghreb prayers to officially observe the crescent moon, signaling the beginning of Ramadan. This ninth month in the Islamic calendar is a time when Muslims worldwide fast from sunrise to sunset.
