Crackdown on Mobile Phone Theft and Smuggling Operation: Two Arrested in Ahmedabad
In a significant operation against organized crime, the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch apprehended Avinash Mahato and Shyam Kurmi for their alleged involvement in a mobile phone theft and smuggling ring. The arrests on February 13, 2024, led to the recovery of 58 mobile phones valued at approximately INR 4,28,000.
From Laborers to Thieves: Avinash and Shyam’s Involvement
Originally laborers from Jharkhand, Avinash and Shyam were recruited and trained by Avinash’s brother, Pintoo Mahato, and another individual named Rahul Mahato. Over a 45-day period, the duo underwent rigorous training to master the art of stealing mobile phones and evading capture.
Modus Operandi: Stealing, Unlocking, and Smuggling Phones
Upon recruitment, Avinash and Shyam received a monthly salary of INR 25,000 to steal high-end mobile phones, focusing on brands like iPhones and OnePlus. They managed to steal 29 iPhones and 9 OnePlus devices, collectively worth INR 20.60 lakh. The stolen phones were unlocked using fake SIM cards and IDs, later seized by the police during the operation. Subsequently, the unlocked devices were smuggled to Bangladesh and Nepal for profitable resale.
Larger Criminal Network: Investigation Unfolding
The arrests have uncovered a more extensive criminal network operating in Ahmedabad. Pintoo Mahato and Rahul Mahato are believed to be key figures, responsible for recruiting and training individuals for thefts across multiple cities. Nineteen complaints have been registered against Avinash and Shyam so far, highlighting the scale of their criminal activities.
As the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch continues its investigation, the arrests emphasize the ongoing battle against organized crime in India. The successful recovery of stolen mobile phones and the disruption of the criminal network underscore law enforcement’s tireless efforts to ensure the safety of the city.
