Congress Party’s Historic Victory in Telangana Assembly Polls
The Congress Party achieved a historic victory in the Telangana assembly elections, toppling the nearly decade-long rule of K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS). Winning 64 seats, the Congress surpassed the majority mark in the 119-member assembly, while the BRS secured 39 seats. The BJP won 8 seats, AIMIM 7, and CPI claimed one seat. This win marks a significant political shift in Telangana, ending the dominance of BRS, which has been in power since the state’s formation in 2014.
Key Wins and Losses for Major Parties
In a major upset, three BJP Lok Sabha members who contested in the assembly elections faced defeat, while three Congress Lok Sabha members and a BRS MP emerged victorious. Notably, BJP’s national general secretary Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and MPs D Arvind and Soyam Bapu Rao lost their respective constituencies. In contrast, Congress Lok Sabha members A Revanth Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and N Uttam Kumar Reddy won their seats. The BRS’s Kotha Prabhakar Reddy also secured a win. However, the highlight was BJP candidate Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy’s victory over Chief Minister KCR and PCC president A Revanth Reddy in the Kamareddy constituency.
Factors Behind Congress’s Triumph
The Congress victory is attributed to a combination of factors, including anti-incumbency against BRS MLAs, a shift in BJP’s state leadership, and perceptions of a covert alliance between BRS and AIMIM. Additionally, the Congress’s manifesto, promising cash transfers, pension schemes, free electricity, cooking gas cylinders, and land to a broad voter base, played a crucial role. The party’s commitment to minority welfare, including the proposed ₹4,000 crore annual budget and the Abdul Kalam Taufa-e-Taleem Scheme, also contributed to their success.

A Revanth Reddy, who won from the Kodangal constituency and is a Lok Sabha member from Malkajgiri, has emerged as a central figure in the Telangana Congress. His leadership and the party’s impressive electoral performance position him as a key figure in shaping the state’s political future. The newly-elected Telangana Congress MLAs are set to meet and likely elect their Legislature Party Leader, marking the beginning of a new political era in the state.
