Randeep Singh Surjewala, a prominent Congress leader and in charge of poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, has launched a scathing attack on the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government and the central government, accusing them of deceiving farmers. Surjewala’s criticisms were aired during a press conference where he alleged that the state government had conveyed that the minimum support price (MSP) required for various crops was higher than what the Centre had announced.

Surjewala pointed out the disparity between MSP announcements and actual crop procurement. In the case of rice production for the year 2022-23, which stood at 1302 lakh tonnes, only 651 lakh tonnes were procured at MSP. He highlighted that the situation was even worse for crops like wheat, concluding that the MSP policies of the BJP were only on paper.

The Congress leader did not mince words in his critique of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, labeling him as “Radio Gappistan.” Surjewala expressed his commitment to provide farmers with a better support price than the Swaminathan formula, underlining the Congress’s dedication to addressing farmers’ concerns.Surjewala also raised concerns about the limited allocations for the Bhavantar Yojana, a scheme designed to benefit farmers. He revealed that the state government allocated only Rs 1000 in the 2023-24 budget for this scheme, with no expenditure recorded in the previous years, contrasting this with the Congress government’s actions in 2019-20 when it allocated and spent significantly more to benefit farmers.

The Congress leader highlighted the challenges farmers face due to rising costs of diesel, seeds, and electricity. He pledged that the Congress would ensure that farmers receive a more favorable price for their wheat and rice, surpassing the recommendations of the Swaminathan report.

Furthermore, he promised that farmers with motors of up to 5 HP would not be burdened with bills. With Madhya Pradesh set to go to the polls next month, these issues have come to the forefront of the political discourse, reflecting the significance of agricultural concerns in the region. Voting for the 230 seats in the state assembly is scheduled for November 17, with the counting of votes to follow on December 3.
