CIVICUS to release State of Civil Society 2025 report
CIVICUS will release its flagship annual State of Civil Society Report, identifying trends in civil society action, at every level and in every arena – from responses to conflicts to struggles for democracy, climate justice and inclusion.
Drawn from CIVICUS’s rolling analysis and commentary, directly informed by the voices of civil society affected by and responding to the major issues and challenges of the day, it reflects hundreds of interviews in over 120 countries and territories.
After 14 years of tracking civil society, the report sounds the alarm about a time of accelerating crises, as nationalist populists unravel democratic institutions, warmongering leaders slaughter civilians, tech billionaires and social media fuel disinformation, governments backtrack on climate commitments and hard-won gender equality and LGBTQI+ rights are under siege.
In the face of a leadership vacuum at the international level, the 2025 State of Civil Society Report highlights civil society’s vital efforts to combat authoritarianism, disinformation, and repression.
Among them: investing in counter-narratives, reconnecting with communities, mobilising as movements rather than organisations, and practising principled leadership. The 2025 State of Civil Society Report documents 2024 as a year of impunity – for the most powerful governments, conflict perpetrators and and the world’s richest – but also highlights how civil society can not just survive, but thrive.
