The 40-day severe winter period known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’ commenced on Thursday, living up to its name as Srinagar experienced a frigid temperature of minus 4.3°C, according to officials.

A spokesperson from the meteorological department noted that the minimum temperature in Srinagar today was 2.8°C below the normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The intense cold conditions resulted in the freezing of water bodies and water taps in various locations in Srinagar and surrounding districts, as reported.

Qazigund maintained a minimum temperature of minus 4.0°C, identical to the previous night. The temperature in the gateway town of Kashmir was 2.4°C below the seasonal norm, the meteorological official mentioned.

Pahalgam, the renowned resort in south Kashmir, reported a low of minus 5.8°C, compared to minus 6.3°C the previous night, registering a deviation of 1.4°C below normal.

In south Kashmir’s Kokernag, the temperature dipped to minus 3.0°C, slightly warmer than the previous night’s minus 3.3°C, but still 1.3°C below the average for the location, the official stated.

The northern town of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 4.0°C, down from minus 3.5°C the previous night, with the temperature 1.4°C below the seasonal norm, according to the meteorological department.

Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.0°C, showing a slight increase from the previous night’s minus 4.4°C. However, it remained 1.8°C above the normal temperature.

Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, reported a minimum of 7.3°C, a drop from the previous night’s 6.4°C, and 1.6°C below the seasonal norm. Banihal recorded 7.6°C, Batote 6.0°C, and Bhaderwah 2.4°C, according to the official.

Despite ‘Chillai-Kalan’ ending on January 30, winter persists with a 20-day period known as ‘Chillai-Khurd’ between January 30 and February 19, followed by a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) period from February 20 to March 1.

The meteorological department forecasts “generally mainly dry” and cold weather in Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours. On December 23, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with a chance of light snow in isolated higher reaches, followed by generally dry conditions from December 24 to 28, with no significant weather activity anticipated until December 28.
