Chila-i-Khurd Begins on a Dry Note
The 40-day harshest winter period, Chila-i-Kalan, has ended in the Valley without any major wet spell. The Chila-i-Khurd, a 20-day milder winter period, has commenced on a dry note with the weatherman predicting no major activity in the next few days but also stating that light snowfall and rain are expected in the higher reaches intermittently till February 5.
The chilly weather conditions usually witnessed during the harshest winter period could not be experienced due to the prolonged dry spell in this Chila-i-Kalan, as the day temperatures settled above normal for the majority of the days.
In the last 29 days of the harshest winter period, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a deficit rainfall of 87 per cent, as against the normal rainfall of 88.2 mm. The Union Territory has recorded a precipitation of just 11.5 mm.
As the 20-day milder winter period commenced from today, the weather remained almost dry across Jammu and Kashmir, while Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said that there is no forecast of any major weather activity till February 5.
However, he said that there is a possibility of light snow from tomorrow in the higher reaches and also some parts of the plains. “Another wet spell is expected on February 4,” he said.
Partly to generally cloudy weather is expected from February 6 to February 8, he added.
Meanwhile, the MeT has advised tourists, travellers, and transporters to follow administration and traffic advisories. (KNO)
