Centre assigns Y category CRPF security to BJP leaders
The central government has taken steps to bolster the security arrangements for BJP leaders Abhay Singh and Awdhesh Pratap Singh by providing them with ‘Y+’ category security cover, manned by armed Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, according to sources.
Security Upgrade for Apna Dal Leader Anupriya Patel
Earlier on March 9, the central government upgraded the security of Anupriya Patel, a leader of the Apna Dal (S) Party and Minister of State for Commerce and Industries, to ‘Z’ category in Uttar Pradesh. Patel, who is also the President of BJP ally Apna Dal (Sonelal), currently receives ‘Y+’ category security cover from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) across India.
Extension of Security Cover
Patel’s existing ‘Y+’ category security cover by the CISF will now extend to other parts of the country, in addition to Uttar Pradesh. However, she will receive ‘Z’ category security only in Uttar Pradesh during her presence and movements within the state.
Reasons Behind Security Upgrades
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) decided to enhance Patel’s security cover in Uttar Pradesh following a recent threat analysis report from the Intelligence Bureau, particularly in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Last year, in June, the MHA directed the CISF to provide ‘Y+’ category security cover to Patel on a pan-India basis.
Currently, the CISF provides security cover to approximately 155 individuals, including Patel. Among them, nearly 20 receive ‘Y+’ category security cover from the CISF, a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
