John Nichols, the acclaimed author known for his impactful novels and contributions to cinema, passed away at the age of 83 in Taos, New Mexico. As reported by Deadline, Nichols leaves behind a legacy of over a dozen books, many of which have been transformed into films by notable directors.
Nichols’ Notable Works and Film Adaptations
Among Nichols’ most celebrated works is ‘The Milagro Beanfield War,’ a novel that delves into the struggles of small-town New Mexico and themes of social injustice. This book was not only co-written by Nichols but also adapted into a successful 1988 film by Robert Redford. The film, renowned for its jazzy Oscar-winning score by Dave Grusin, starred Ruben Blades, Richard Bradford, and Sonia Braga, and highlighted conflicts between Latino farmers and local authorities and developers.
Another significant contribution by Nichols was ‘The Sterile Cuckoo,’ his breakthrough novel that was later adapted into a film by Alan J. Pakula. This film, released four years after the novel’s publication, starred Liza Minnelli and Wendell Burton in a poignant love story.
Nichols’ Trilogy and Other Works
Nichols also wrote ‘The Wizard of Loneliness,’ which was adapted into a 1988 film by director Jenny Bowen, featuring Lukas Haas and Lea Thompson. His well-known “New Mexico trilogy” includes ‘The Magic Journey’ and ‘The Nirvana Blues,’ alongside ‘The Milagro Beanfield War.’
A Prolific Career and Advocacy for Social Justice
In addition to his fiction, Nichols authored more than half a dozen nonfiction books. His latest work, ‘I Got Mine: Confessions of a Midlist Writer,’ was published last year. Nichols was not only a prolific writer but also an ardent social justice campaigner. His life and literary journey were captured in the 2012 feature documentary ‘The Milagro Man: The Irrepressible Multicultural Life and Literary Times of John Nichols,’ directed by Kurt Jacobsen. This documentary, based on an extensive interview with Nichols, offers an intimate look into his creative process and his multifaceted life.
