CBI Takes Custody of Suspended TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan
In the midst of escalating political tensions between the TMC and BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Sheikh Shahjahan, the suspended Trinamool leader and key accused in the Sandeshkhali extortion, land grab, and sexual assault cases, has been handed over to the custody of the CBI. This move follows accusations from BJP leaders, alleging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s protection of Shahjahan.
High Court Intervention and CBI Custody
Responding to the Calcutta High Court’s directive, the Crime Investigation Department transferred Sheikh Shahjahan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody on Wednesday. The High Court, issuing a contempt notice to the West Bengal CID, emphasized the need for a CBI investigation into the attack on ED officials and the prompt transfer of Sheikh Shahjahan’s custody to the agency.
BJP’s Accusations and Legal Battles
Accusing CM Mamata Banerjee of shielding Shahjahan, BJP leaders voiced concerns about the defiance of the High Court’s order and criticized the state police’s handling of the matter. West Bengal LoP and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari condemned Banerjee, highlighting the urgency for justice and the protection of women’s dignity.
Prime Minister’s Intervention and Victims’ Plea
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the victims of sexual assault in Sandeshkhali village, expressing empathy and assuring them of support. The victims, disillusioned with the state government, requested the deployment of Central Forces, citing a lack of faith in the current administration. PM Modi condemned the TMC government for shielding the accused and called it a “matter of shame.”
Supreme Court Challenge and Ongoing Strife
The West Bengal government sought an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI probe into the Sandeshkhali matter. The legal battle intensifies as the political turmoil surrounding Sheikh Shahjahan’s case unfolds, raising questions about justice, governance, and the protection of women in West Bengal.
