CBI Conducts Searches at West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim and TC MLA Madan Mitra’s Residences
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at the residences of West Bengal’s Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Firhad Hakim, and Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra in Kolkata. This action is part of the CBI’s investigation into alleged irregularities in recruitments made by civic bodies in the state.
Search Operations and Developments
Early in the morning, a team of CBI officers arrived at Firhad Hakim’s residence in the Chetla area of south Kolkata, accompanied by a substantial contingent of central forces. The minister, who is also the Mayor of Kolkata and a prominent leader in the Trinamool Congress, was questioned by two CBI officers.
Simultaneously, a CBI team conducted searches at the residence of Madan Mitra, a former minister and the MLA of Kamarhati in North 24 Parganas district, located in the Bhabanipur area, approximately 3 km from Hakim’s residence in Chetla.
Both Firhad Hakim and Madan Mitra had been arrested by the CBI in 2021 in the Narada sting operation case. Previously, Mitra was also arrested by the CBI in 2014 in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.
Earlier last week, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted searches at multiple locations, including the residence of Food and Supplies Minister Rathin Ghosh, in relation to the same recruitment case.
Allegations and Investigation
Central investigative agencies have alleged that approximately 1,500 individuals were recruited illegally by various civic bodies in West Bengal between 2014 and 2018, with monetary considerations playing a significant role in these recruitments.
