Leader of Opposition Allowed Visit with Conditions
Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has been allowed to visit Sandeshkhali on Thursday by Justice Kaushik Chandra of the HC bench, with the condition that he refrains from making any inflammatory comments during the visit. Adhikari had expressed satisfaction with the High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam’s order granting him permission to visit the island, which has witnessed violent protests.
Arrest of Fact-Finding Team and Subsequent Events
The fact-finding team, comprising members such as Charu Bali Khanna, Bhavna Bajaj, OP Vyas, Rajpal Singh, Aparna Banerjee, and Bandana Biswas, was arrested in South 24 Parganas district on Sunday. Authorities claim the arrest was made under preventive sections due to an alleged “breach of peace.” The team was brought to Kolkata’s police headquarters, Lal Bazaar.
Suvendu Adhikari’s Perspective
Suvendu Adhikari, upon his visit to Sandeshkhali, highlighted the satisfaction of the people with the Chief Justice’s verdict. He claimed that with the arrival of the CBI, the state police have disappeared, and he expressed confidence in justice being served for the women in Sandeshkhali who have accused TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides of atrocities.
Background of Protests in Sandeshkhali
The island of Sandeshkhali has witnessed violent protests with women accusing TMC strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of land-grab and sexual assault. The situation escalated, leading to the involvement of the Calcutta High Court and the subsequent fact-finding mission. The visit by Adhikari and the independent panel aims to address the grievances and ensure a fair investigation into the alleged atrocities.
