The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet has passed a unanimous resolution urging the Union Government to restore the region’s statehood in its original form. The decision, made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday, marks a significant step toward reclaiming the constitutional rights and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Restoring statehood is seen as a key part of the healing process for the region, which has undergone significant political changes in recent years. The Cabinet authorized the Chief Minister to engage directly with the Prime Minister and the Government of India on this matter. Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to press the case for statehood restoration.
In addition to the statehood resolution, the Cabinet also made preparations for the summoning of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The Assembly session is scheduled to begin on November 4, 2024, in Srinagar.
The Cabinet advised the Lieutenant Governor to summon and address the session, and the draft address was discussed among the ministers.
The Council of Ministers also recommended the appointment of Mubarik Gul as Protem Speaker. Gul will administer the oath to the newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly on October 21, 2024.
His appointment has since been confirmed by an official order from the Lieutenant Governor. The Protem Speaker will hold the position until the election of a permanent Speaker takes place.
The steps taken by the Cabinet reflect the new government’s focus on protecting the unique identity and constitutional rights of Jammu and Kashmir.
