British PM Rishi Sunak Announces Increased Military Funding for Ukraine during Kyiv Visit
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a visit to Kyiv, announcing an increase in military funding to aid Ukraine in acquiring new military drones. The additional support, totaling £2.5 billion ($3.19 billion) in the next financial year, marks a £200 million increase from the previous two years. Sunak emphasized that the UK would deliver the most extensive supply of drones to Ukraine from any nation, with a significant portion expected to be manufactured in Britain.
The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with international partners, will substantially boost the number of drones provided for Ukraine’s defense, focusing on surveillance, long-range strike, and sea drones. Simultaneously, the two countries plan to sign a historic UK-Ukraine Agreement on Security Cooperation, formalizing various forms of support, such as intelligence sharing, cybersecurity, medical and military training, and defense industrial cooperation.
The move follows the Group of Seven nations’ agreement to offer bilateral security assurances to Ukraine. Sunak emphasized the UK’s commitment to standing with Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy, stating, “We will stand with Ukraine, in their darkest hours and in the better times to come.” The increased military funding and support underscore the UK’s strong backing for Kyiv in the face of Russia’s invasion.
