In a candid expression of his views, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has alleged that the BJP government at the Centre lacks the courage to hold elections in the sensitive region of Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, even the parliamentary elections in the area are only happening out of compulsion rather than a genuine commitment to democracy.

The situation has been further complicated by the lack of clarity on the holding of elections. Despite assurances given by the BJP-led Central government in the Supreme Court, there has been no official notification regarding elections to urban local bodies and panchayats. The challenges faced during the LAHDC-Kargil polls have cast a long shadow over the feasibility of conducting elections throughout Jammu and Kashmir.

One of the most significant concerns raised by Abdullah is the delay in holding Assembly elections. The last Assembly elections in the region took place in 2014, and since then, the state has been under the governor’s rule for five years. This extended period of governance by proxy has left many questioning the reasons behind the delay in democratic processes.

According to Abdullah, the reluctance to hold elections stems from the BJP’s apprehension about facing the electorate. While the BJP projects confidence in the public sphere, Abdullah suggests that there is a palpable fear within their ranks. They appear to be well aware of the public’s sentiment and only seem compelled to conduct parliamentary elections due to external pressure.

The NC leader asserts, “They shy away from facing the people. There will be no Panchayat, BDC, DDC, urban local body, or assembly elections before the parliamentary polls.” He points to the LAHDC-Kargil poll results as a clear demonstration of the BJP’s apprehensions, where the NC-Congress alliance secured a significant number of seats, even gaining support from independent candidates.

Omar Abdullah also sought to provide reassurance to daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir, promising that elections are inevitable, and once the NC comes to power, efforts will be made to regularize the status of these workers.

In conclusion, Abdullah raises concerns about the delay and reluctance in conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He believes that the current government’s fear of facing the electorate has led to a delay in various democratic processes, and it remains to be seen when the region will see the return of regular elections and representative governance.
