BJP Convenes Punjab Core Committee for Lok Sabha Polls
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab chief Sunil Jakhar and state in-charge of Punjab and Chandigarh, Vijay Rupani, convened the party’s core committee meeting in Chandigarh, gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
BJP Convenes Punjab Core Committee:BJP’s Strategy for Punjab and Chandigarh
Vijay Rupani expressed confidence in BJP’s decision to contest independently on all 13 seats in Punjab and one seat in Chandigarh, citing positive reception. He emphasized that the party’s expansion strategy includes welcoming new entrants, even sitting MPs, signifying a promising trajectory for BJP’s influence in the region.

“PM Modi is needed for Punjab and the country,” Rupani asserted, highlighting the appeal driving individuals to join BJP’s fold. He noted a shift in BJP’s approach, moving from contesting only two to three seats in Punjab previously to embracing a comprehensive strategy of contesting on all 13 seats this time, with the anticipation of enhancing the party’s performance.
This strategic decision by BJP to go solo in Punjab was catalyzed by the dissolution of its longstanding alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) amidst the farmers’ protest, reshaping the political landscape in the state.
BJP Convenes Punjab Core Committee:Expanding Presence: Contesting Alone
Earlier, Sunil Jakhar announced BJP’s independent stance for the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, signaling a departure from previous alliances. The party’s momentum received a significant boost with Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu joining BJP, a move symbolic of shifting allegiances within Punjab’s political spectrum. Bittu’s familial ties to former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and former Punjab minister Tej Parkash Singh add weight to BJP’s cadre.
Additionally, the defection of two Aam Aadmi Party leaders, Jalandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku and Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural, further strengthens BJP’s position in the region, underlining a trend of political realignment.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured two seats in Punjab, while its ally SAD clinched two seats. The Congress emerged victorious in eight constituencies, with the Aam Aadmi Party securing one seat. With Punjab’s 13 parliamentary constituencies at stake, BJP’s solo endeavor marks a strategic pivot in its electoral calculus, aiming for greater representation and influence in the region.
