Bengaluru Police Arrest Doctor and Technician in Illegal Abortion Racket
The Bengaluru Police have apprehended a doctor and a lab technician for their involvement in an extensive illegal abortion operation. Dr. Chandan Ballal and his lab technician, Nisar, are alleged to have conducted about 900 unlawful abortions over the last three years, with each procedure costing around Rs 30,000. The operations were carried out at a hospital in Mysuru, a district headquarters town.
Earlier in the month, the hospital’s manager, Meena, and receptionist, Rizma Khan, were also arrested. The police uncovered the sex-determination and female foeticide racket last month following the arrest of two individuals, Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar. They were apprehended in Mandya, near Mysuru, while escorting a pregnant woman for an abortion.
Seizure of Unauthorized Medical Equipment
Upon interrogation, the duo disclosed the location of a jaggery unit in Mandya used as an ultrasound scan center. A police team later seized a scan machine from this site, which lacked proper authorization and official documentation.
Ongoing Investigation and Search for Other Suspects
According to a senior police officer, a preliminary inquiry revealed the scale of the illegal operations conducted by Dr. Ballal and his associates. The police are continuing their investigation to capture additional suspects linked to this racket.
This case highlights the concerning issue of illegal abortion and sex-determination practices, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement and awareness regarding reproductive rights and medical ethics.
