In 2023, Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir encountered 364 fire incidents, resulting in a significant loss of property worth Rs 10 crore, reported a senior official from the Fire and Emergency Department.
Mir Arif, Deputy Director at the F&ES headquarters in Sopore, highlighted that while these incidents caused extensive damage, there was a noticeable decrease compared to the previous year, primarily due to electric short circuits.
Mir emphasized that electric short circuits remained the leading cause of these incidents, resulting in a notable reduction from the prior year’s numbers. The region is served by 15 Fire and Emergency stations, manned by a team of 171 personnel dedicated to combatting such fires.
In 2022, Baramulla district faced 406 fire incidents, resulting in four fatalities and damage to approximately 240 structures, causing substantial financial losses.
Fire and Emergency Services officials applauded the efforts of local firefighting units, commending their prompt responses and unwavering dedication in curtailing the impact of these incidents.
The department has been actively involved in various initiatives to decrease fire incidents. Public awareness campaigns have been initiated to educate people about the cautious use of electronic gadgets, especially during winter months.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and prioritize fire safety by installing smoke detectors at home, ensuring the availability of fire extinguishers, and devising evacuation plans for emergencies.
Adhering to these crucial measures can significantly contribute to fostering a safer living environment, underscoring the pivotal role individuals play in maintaining their safety and security, as highlighted by officials.
