Assembly Elections in JK to Start Soon: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar on Saturday said the Election Commission will start the process of holding Assembly elections in the Union Territory “very soon”.
In response to the turnout in various seats of Jammu and Kashmir and if the assembly elections can be held soon, the Chief Election Commissioner said that the polling panel was very encouraged by the participation of people in the parliamentary elections.
He said, “This is music to (my) ears.” People, youth and women are happily coming out (to vote) in large numbers, the roots of democracy are getting stronger, people are participating,” he said. “People of Jammu and Kashmir deserve their own government. , we will start the process very soon, there is a lot of encouragement to do so.
Announcing the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections in March, Kumar said that holding the assembly and parliamentary elections together was due to logistical and security reasons. Whenever assembly elections are held in Jammu and Kashmir, it will be the first after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August 2019 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
The election exercise in Kashmir usually lasts for a month. After the delimitation exercise, the number of assembly seats has increased from 83 to 90, excluding the seats that were allocated to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In December, the Supreme Court had directed the polling panel to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30.
