Army Major Opens Fire on Fellow Soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir
In a rare and distressing incident, an Army Major opened fire and threw grenades at fellow soldiers from the army’s 48 Rashtriya Rifles unit at a forward base near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri’s Thanamandi area. The incident took place on Thursday, resulting in injuries to some soldiers. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties, and the Major responsible for the incident has been apprehended.
The officer involved in this unfortunate incident was reportedly dealing with personal issues, according to officials familiar with the matter. The injured soldiers were promptly taken to a hospital.
Details of the incident were limited at the time of reporting, and there has been no official statement from the Indian Army in Delhi or Jammu. The 48 Rashtriya Rifles unit specializes in counter-terrorism operations.
According to one official, the Major initially fired shots into the air before targeting some soldiers within the unit. Another official mentioned that a few officers, including the regimental medical officer, rushed to the scene when the firing began and were also targeted by the Major with grenades.
This incident follows two major terror attacks in the Jammu region earlier in the year, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region. In May, a terror ambush in Rajouri’s Kandi forest area resulted in the death of five soldiers and injuries to an officer. Another attack in Poonch in April had previously claimed the lives of five soldiers. Additionally, this incident comes six months after a fratricide attack at an officers’ mess in the Bathinda military station in Punjab, which resulted in the deaths of four soldiers.
The incident underscores the need for prompt attention to the mental health and well-being of military personnel and the importance of addressing personal issues within the armed forces.
