Army Commander Reviews Counter-Infiltration Measures in Gurez Sector Amid Winter Concerns
A high-ranking army official conducted a visit to the forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to assess the readiness of the counter-infiltration grid in anticipation of Republic Day, as per officials on Wednesday.
Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the General Officer Commanding of the Army’s 15 Corps, undertook the visit to the forward areas in the Gurez sector of Bandipora district on Tuesday. The primary objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of the counter-infiltration grid and ensure operational preparedness, officials reported.
Security authorities are expressing apprehension regarding the potential infiltration of terrorists into the valley due to the insufficient snowfall in the higher altitudes of Kashmir this winter. Typically, heavy snowfall during winter months blocks mountain passes along the LoC, reducing the likelihood of terrorists infiltrating. However, the dry winter has compelled the counter-infiltration grid to heighten surveillance along the LoC.
During his interaction with the troops, Lt Gen Ghai urged them to maintain a “high state of operational readiness” in challenging weather conditions and terrain. The focus is on ensuring that the armed forces are well-prepared for any potential security threats.
Director General of Police R R Swain acknowledged on Tuesday that cross-border infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir remains a challenge for the security forces. Despite this challenge, he asserted that the security situation is under control. Swain acknowledged the presence of a few infiltrating terrorists and emphasized the importance of viewing the situation with a different perspective. He noted that the majority of the local population is not aligning with these infiltrators, emphasizing the overall control maintained by the security forces over the security situation in the region.
