Nearly 80 years after the end of World War II, a study by the Claims Conference revealed that approximately 245,000 Holocaust survivors are still alive across over 90 countries.

The organization, which seeks damages for Holocaust survivors, highlighted that 119,300 survivors reside in Israel, 38,400 in the United States, 21,900 in France, and 14,200 in Germany.

The report emphasized that the survivors, who were mostly children during Nazi persecution, faced slim chances of survival. With a median age of 86, this population requires increasing care and services, prompting a call to focus attention on their needs.

Gideon Taylor, president of the Claims Conference, urged a concerted effort to support this aging population, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the survivors’ experiences during a dark period in history.

The Claims Conference, founded in 1951, played a crucial role in seeking damages for Holocaust survivors and was involved in the Luxembourg Agreement, holding West Germany responsible for Nazi atrocities and securing reparations.

Germany has paid over $90 billion as a result of negotiations with the Claims Conference since the signing of the accord. Some survivors, based on their experiences, continue to receive ongoing payments, while others receive one-time payouts.
