Apple to Adopt RCS Messaging Protocol in 2024 for Better iPhone-Android Texting
Apple is reportedly set to enhance the texting experience between iPhone and Android devices by introducing the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol in 2024. This move is seen as a significant step in improving interoperability and feature-rich messaging between the two platforms.
The RCS standard will bring several advanced messaging features to iPhone users, aligning with the capabilities already available on Android. These include read receipts, typing indicators, and the ability to share high-resolution images and videos. Unlike traditional SMS, RCS can function over both mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Apple’s Official Statement
According to 9to5Mac, an Apple spokesperson confirmed the integration of RCS Universal Profile into iPhones by next year. This support, as detailed in the statement, aims to provide a better and more interoperable messaging experience than traditional SMS or MMS. The RCS feature will be available through a software update and will operate alongside Apple’s iMessage.
Interoperability Between iPhone and Android
The adoption of RCS on iPhones is expected to streamline communication between iPhone and Android users. Features like location sharing in text threads, group chats, and the sharing of high-resolution media will become more seamless. RCS messages may be displayed in green, similar to SMS messages.
Google and Samsung, who have long supported RCS, have been urging Apple to adopt this standard. Google’s Senior Vice President Hiroshi Lockheimer welcomed Apple’s decision, emphasizing the importance of secure and modern messaging accessible to all, regardless of the device.
iMessage Remains Apple Exclusive
Despite these advancements, iMessage will continue to be exclusive to Apple devices. The introduction of RCS is not expected to bridge all feature gaps between iMessage and Android messaging but is a significant step towards more cohesive cross-platform communication.
The announcement coincides with the news of Carl Pei’s Nothing technology company enabling iMessage support on its Android phones, further bridging the gap between the two ecosystems.
