Largest visual message against war on Iran yet by Iranian Americans since war broke out
New York, NY – This weekend, the nation’s largest anti-war Iranian American community organization will launch a major visual in Times Square opposing Trump’s war on Iran. The billboard message comes on the heels of Trump’s address to the nation last night in which he vowed to “send Iran back to the Stone Age, where they belong”, and weeks of anti-war mobilization by Iranian Americans around the country.
Since war broke out over 32 days ago, Iranian Americans who oppose this war have steadily organized to force it to a halt. NIAC’s 70,000 members around the country have organized call-ins to Congress to force a War Powers vote that prohibits war on Iran under the Constitution. Despite having the historic opportunity to pass an Iran war powers resolution over objections from Republican leadership, Democratic Leader Jeffries declined to bring the War Powers resolution to the floor for a vote before recess, and Iranian Americans will organize an accountability press conference outside his office in New York in the coming week to demand he reverse course and assert Congress’s authority amid this crisis.
While the Iranian-American community has historically been united against war on Iran, the community was divided on the question at the outset of the current war according to polling commissioned by NIAC. However, those sentiments have shifted over the course of the war and new polling indicates Iranian-American support for the war has plummeted and 70% now say the war should end. Iranian Americans joined millions around the country who took to the streets last weekend as part of ‘No King’ protests to demand an end to the war on Iran.
Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council, said:
“The war we have warned about for decades is here, ushered in by Trump’s betrayal of American diplomacy in tearing up the Obama nuclear deal 10 years ago then waging his senseless war of choice today. Anyone who still believes that ‘help is on the way’ and this war was waged to ‘liberate the Iranian people’ should have received a wake-up call from President Trump’s address, in which he threatened to wipe out civilian infrastructure that 90 million Iranians depend on and pledged to bomb Iran ‘back to the stone age where they belong.’
We will not be silent as Trump and Israel lay waste to Iranian civil infrastructure, kill hundreds of civilians, destroy cultural heritage sites and throw the world economy into upheaval. President Trump: end this war now.”
With the launch of this major visual message in Times Square, the movement of Iranian Americans against war will send a clear message to Trump: end this war now.
