In the opening T20 clash between West Indies and England at Bridgetown, Andre Russell’s three-wicket haul and an unbeaten partnership with captain Rovman Powell steered West Indies to a thrilling four-wicket win.

England, after losing the toss, began aggressively with Phil Salt (40) and Jos Buttler (39) establishing a strong start, reaching 112-2 midway. However, West Indies fought back, restricting England to 171 all out in 19.3 overs.

The chase for West Indies wasn’t smooth either, with Rehan Ahmed (3-39) creating a stir by picking up two wickets in successive balls. Adil Rashid (2-14) also made an impact, marking his 100th T20I appearance by becoming the first Englishman to claim 100 T20I wickets. However, Powell and Russell (29*) then formed an explosive 49-run partnership in just 21 balls, guiding West Indies to victory with 11 balls to spare, securing a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England’s strong start, with Salt’s aggressive knock and a 77-run partnership with Buttler, fizzled out due to West Indies’ bowling prowess. The hosts managed to take crucial wickets, limiting England’s progress.

In reply, West Indies saw Brandon King (22) and Kyle Mayers (35) provide a steady opening partnership, but regular wickets kept the game tense. Ahmed’s impactful bowling and Rashid’s milestone wicket initially swung momentum back towards England.

However, Russell’s resilient performance and Powell’s support changed the course of the game. Russell’s calculated hitting brought West Indies closer to victory, sealing a triumphant start to the series.

Looking ahead, the series moves to Grenada for two consecutive matches before concluding with two fixtures in Trinidad and Tobago on December 19 and 21.
