ADR Report Reveals Alarming Statistics Ahead of Madhya Pradesh Assembly Polls

With the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls on the horizon, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shed light on the concerning state of affairs. According to the ADR’s report, a staggering 93 out of the 230 sitting MLAs in the state have criminal cases registered against them, raising serious questions about the integrity of the state’s political landscape.

Criminal Records and Political Affiliation

The ADR, a non-profit organization committed to transparency in politics, unveiled that these 93 tainted MLAs hail from various political parties. Among them, 39 belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 52 are affiliated with the Congress Party, one represents the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and the remaining one is an independent legislator.

The gravity of the situation becomes even more apparent when considering the nature of these criminal cases. Shockingly, 47 out of the 93 MLAs face serious criminal charges. One MLA carries the weight of a murder case (IPC section 302) against them, while six others are accused of attempted murder (IPC 307). Furthermore, two MLAs are entangled in cases related to crimes against women (IPC 354).

The Wealth Disparity in the Legislative Body

The ADR report also uncovers another striking revelation. Out of the 230 sitting MLAs, an astonishing 186 are ‘crorepatis,’ indicating that their net worth exceeds one crore Indian Rupees. The wealth distribution is remarkably uneven, with 76 out of 97 Congress MLAs being crorepati, including Sanjay Shukla, who is the richest among them with a total wealth of over Rs 139 crore.

On the other side of the aisle, 107 out of the 129 BJP MLAs are also crorepati. The wealthiest BJP MLA is Sanjay Pathak, with a total wealth exceeding Rs 226 crore. It’s worth noting that three independent MLAs in the state also fall within the crorepati category, adding to the financial diversity within the legislative body.

Educational Qualifications of Sitting MLAs

The ADR’s report extends to the educational qualifications of Madhya Pradesh’s sitting MLAs. It reveals a diverse range of educational backgrounds among the legislators. While 62 MLAs have declared their educational qualification to be between Class 5th and 12th, a significant majority of 158 MLAs have declared themselves to be graduates or hold higher degrees. Additionally, four MLAs have declared themselves as diploma holders, while five MLAs identify as literate. One MLA, alarmingly, declared themselves as illiterate.

As Madhya Pradesh gears up for assembly polls scheduled for November 17, these findings from the ADR report underscore the need for a deeper examination of the state’s political landscape and the commitment to ensuring transparent and accountable governance.
