Accountability Court Grants Pakistan President Immunity from Criminal Proceedings
An accountability court in Islamabad granted Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari immunity from criminal proceedings in two National Accountability Court cases, reported Dawn. Since Zardari’s election as President, no criminal proceedings can be initiated against him, as per court order.
Zardari filed for immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution, halting ongoing criminal proceedings related to the Thatta Water Supply Project and Park Lane cases. The NAB prosecution alleged misuse of authority during Zardari’s previous term, involving loans to his front companies. Zardari extended the immunity claim to two additional cases, according to his lead counsel, Senator Farooq H Naek.
