The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir has arrested a village-level worker (VLW) from Vilgam village in Kupwara district for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹20,000.
The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a resident of Kukrossa village, who alleged that the worker, Nazir Ahmad, was withholding the final installment of a Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) grant unless the bribe was paid.
According to the statement released by the ACB, the complainant had been sanctioned a PMAY grant by the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Vilgam, and had already received two installments totaling ₹1,25,000.
However, the final installment of ₹50,000, which was due in March 2024, had not been released. Despite multiple visits to the BDO office, the complainant’s request for the remaining funds was consistently denied by Ahmad, who allegedly demanded ₹20,000 to facilitate the payment.
Faced with this situation, the complainant approached the ACB to seek legal action against the village-level worker. Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB conducted a preliminary inquiry, which revealed sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.
Consequently, a case was registered under FIR No. 10/2024 at the ACB Baramulla Police Station, and an investigation was initiated.
During the investigation, a trap was set up by the ACB officials. Ahmad was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant.
The bribe money was recovered from Ahmad’s possession, and he was taken into custody immediately following due legal procedures. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
