Cricket icon AB de Villiers has shared his thoughts on Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming South Africa tour. Speaking on his YouTube channel, de Villiers expressed positivity about Samson’s prospects on South African pitches, known for their bounce and movement.
Samson’s Potential on Proteas Wickets
De Villiers noted that Samson, who stands tall while batting, is likely to enjoy and perform well on the South African wickets. He acknowledged the challenge that the Indian batters would face due to the bounce and movement on these pitches but seemed confident about Samson’s abilities.
Samson’s Cricketing Journey
Sanju Samson, 29, made his ODI debut in 2021 against Sri Lanka. Since then, he has played 13 matches, scoring 390 runs with a notable strike rate of 104. De Villiers also highlighted Samson’s dual value to the team, both as a batter and a wicketkeeper.
Tour Itinerary and Squad Details
The India tour of South Africa will commence with a three-match T20I series starting on December 10 at Kingsmead Stadium. The T20I series will conclude on December 14 at Wanderers Stadium, followed by the ODI series beginning on December 17.
The Indian squad for the tour includes separate teams for Tests, T20Is, and ODIs. Key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul feature in the Test squad, while the T20I and ODI squads include a mix of experienced players and new talent. Sanju Samson is included only in the ODI squad for this tour.
