Expired Software License Hampers Forensic Analysis of Seized Mobile Phones in CFSL Delhi

The software license used by the Computer Forensic Division of CFSL Delhi for conducting forensic analysis on seized mobile phones expired in March, causing a disruption in the examination process and resulting in delays in the submission of evidence. CFSL Delhi, previously supervised by the CBI but now under the Directorate of Forensic Science, is grappling with a mounting backlog of cases due to the absence of critical software used for SIM data extraction. The lab’s 256 pending cases include significant ones like the National Stock Exchange case, where it needs to submit reports to various courts. CFSL Delhi receives around 2,000 cases annually from agencies across the country but is currently unable to furnish reports to the courts regarding the forensic examination of seized phones, as the software license expired on March 20. Scientists at the lab cannot provide a timeline for renewing the software license, creating uncertainty in case timelines and procedures.

Special Court Instructs CBI to Collect NSE Case Samples from CFSL Delhi

Due to CFSL Delhi’s software license issue, a special court has directed the CBI to collect samples from the CFSL Delhi related to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) cases and send them to other forensic labs across the country. This move aims to address the delays in the examination and reporting of evidence caused by the software license expiration.

Challenges Faced by CFSL Delhi Impacting Criminal Investigations

The CFSL plays a crucial role in conducting scientific analysis of crime exhibits and offering expert opinions in court cases. However, the expiration of the software license has created a backlog of cases and delays in the examination process, impacting criminal investigations and the justice system.
