US Flags Concerns Over Asim Munir’s Iran Links as Trump Engages Pakistan
NEW DELHI, APR 19 (VOM NEWS): Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir is facing scrutiny in US policy circles as his expanding diplomatic role in the Iran crisis coincides with concerns over his past links to Tehran’s military establishment.
Munir recently concluded a visit to Iran, where he held high-level meetings aimed at advancing mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran. The visit comes amid renewed attempts to revive talks and extend a fragile ceasefire.

Analysts say Munir’s position is unique, with access to both sides. During his tenure in Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus, he is believed to have developed ties with Iranian security networks, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
According to US-based assessments, Munir had interactions with senior Iranian figures such as Qassem Soleimani, the former Quds Force commander, and Hossein Salami. Both were later killed in separate US and Israeli operations.
However, these reported links have raised concerns in Washington. Bill Roggio of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies described Munir’s connections to Iranian military circles as a “red flag,” cautioning against over-reliance on Pakistan as a mediator.
The development comes as US President Donald Trump appears to be stepping up engagement with Pakistan in a bid to broker a deal with Iran. A fresh round of US-Iran talks is expected to be held in Islamabad in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Pakistani analysts suggest Munir’s prominent diplomatic role reflects the military’s growing influence over foreign policy, often overshadowing the civilian leadership.
During his visit, Munir met Iran’s top leadership, including senior government and military officials, as efforts continue to bridge differences and move toward a potential agreement.
