Donald Trump Claims Iran May Hand Over Enriched Uranium Amid Ongoing Talks
Washington, Apr 17 (VoM News): Donald Trump has claimed that Iran may be willing to hand over what he described as “nuclear dust,” referring to its stockpile of highly enriched uranium believed to be buried following earlier United States-Israeli airstrikes on key nuclear facilities.
While there has been no official confirmation from Tehran, such a move—if realised—would mark a significant step toward curbing Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons. Trump indicated that uranium enrichment would cease and that the US would seek to recover and remove the material.
Before the strikes, estimates suggested Iran possessed more than 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60% and nearly 200 kg at 20%, levels that could potentially be further refined to weapons-grade material.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has noted that much of this uranium is stored deep underground at facilities such as Natanz Nuclear Facility and Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center, some of which were targeted during the strikes. Despite reported damage, experts believe Iran may still retain centrifuges and the technical capacity to rebuild its enrichment programme.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are for peaceful energy purposes. However, analysts have questioned this stance, pointing out that nuclear energy accounts for a limited share of the country’s electricity generation, primarily through the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
The issue of enriched uranium remains central to ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran. While verbal assurances may hold limited weight, any physical transfer or surrender of uranium stockpiles would represent a more tangible step toward de-escalation and a potential breakthrough in the talks.
