Kerala Serial Blasts Accused Spent Only ₹3,000 on Making Bombs: Sources
The primary suspect behind the recent series of blasts at a prayer meeting in Kerala has reportedly claimed to have learned bomb-making techniques from the internet. Dominic Martin, a 48-year-old individual, stated that he spent around Rs 3,000 to manufacture the bombs. His background includes expertise in electric circuits, having worked as a foreman in Dubai for years, where he acquired knowledge in assembling electronic devices. Martin returned from Dubai about two months prior to the blasts.
Initial investigations indicate that the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in the attacks were constructed using low-grade explosives typically found in firecrackers. Martin is believed to have assembled these IEDs at his residence. His intention was to target participants of the Jehovah’s Witnesses convention held at a convention center in Kalamassery near Kochi.
Before surrendering to authorities, Martin posted a video message on a social media platform, in which he explained that his actions were driven by his belief that the organization’s teachings were “seditious.” He accused the community of propagating incorrect values, even to children, and claimed to have warned them to no avail. Believing that this community posed a threat to the nation, he resorted to engineering the serial blasts.
The explosions resulted in the tragic deaths of two women and a 12-year-old girl, with approximately 50 people sustaining injuries. The convention was attended by around 2,000 people. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), specializing in counter-terrorism operations, will now handle the investigation into the serial blasts.
This incident underscores the complex challenges of radicalization and domestic terrorism, where individuals may resort to online resources to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for violent acts.
