The Tamil Nadu government has taken a significant step by approaching the Supreme Court, alleging that Governor RN Ravi is intentionally delaying the clearance of bills sent for approval. The government is now urging the court to direct the Governor to provide assent or dispose of these bills within a specified timeframe. This move highlights the ongoing tension between the DMK government and the Tamil Nadu Governor in recent months.

Ongoing Struggles Between DMK Government and Governor Ravi

The clashes between Chief Minister MK Stalin and Governor RN Ravi have not been limited to delayed bills. They have also extended to issues such as Mr. Stalin’s foreign trips, the Dravidian model of governance, and the Governor’s comments regarding the state’s name. The Tamil Nadu government’s latest request to the Supreme Court underscores its concern that bills and orders forwarded by the state assembly are not being promptly cleared by the Governor. Currently, there are twelve bills, four prosecution sanctions, and numerous files related to the premature release of 54 prisoners pending before Governor Ravi.

The government has also accused the Governor of “undermining the will of the people” and “abusing the position of the ceremonial head.” Governor Ravi had previously ignited a debate on the state’s name with his remarks during an event in Chennai, suggesting that “Thamizhagam” might be a more appropriate term for the state. This led to a significant public backlash, prompting the Governor to clarify his comments and revert to using the name Tamil Nadu. In the same month, Governor Ravi left the assembly after Chief Minister MK Stalin moved a resolution to accept only the prepared speech from the state government and exclude any additions or omissions made by the Governor in the customary address.

The Tamil Nadu government’s appeal to the Supreme Court highlights the importance of resolving these disputes to ensure the smooth functioning of the state’s governance.
