Is North Korea Preparing for a Historic Succession Shift? Kim Ju Ae Tipped as Next Leader, but powerful aunt, Kim Yo Jong ….?
North Korea could be heading toward a sensitive succession phase, with reports suggesting that Kim Jong Un may be preparing his teenage daughter as a future leader — a move that could complicate internal power dynamics involving his influential sister.
Kim Ju Ae’s Rising Public Profile
According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kim’s daughter Kim Ju Ae — believed to be around 13 — is increasingly being positioned in public as a potential successor.
She first appeared publicly in November 2022 at a long-range missile test and has since accompanied her father to numerous high-profile events, including military parades, weapons inspections, factory visits and diplomatic engagements. Her growing visibility has prompted analysts to reassess earlier assumptions that North Korea’s male-dominated leadership structure would prevent a female successor.
South Korean intelligence officials are closely watching whether she appears prominently at the upcoming Workers’ Party Congress — a key political gathering where major policy goals are typically announced.
The Aunt With Political Clout
Any future succession scenario could involve Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s 38-year-old sister, widely regarded as one of the most powerful figures in the country.
Kim Yo Jong holds a senior role in the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and is known for her strong influence within both political and military circles. She has frequently issued statements in her own name and has built a reputation for sharp rhetoric, particularly toward South Korea and the United States.
Analysts have suggested that in the event of a sudden leadership vacuum, more politically established figures like Kim Yo Jong could have an advantage over younger, less experienced heirs.
A December analysis by 38 North, a website run by the US-based Stimson Center, warned of potential “turbulence” if Kim Jong Un were to suddenly die or become incapacitated. The report noted that while Kim Ju Ae’s public profile is rising, her age and limited political experience could make an immediate succession unlikely in the near term.
A History of Ruthless Power Consolidation
North Korea’s leadership transitions have historically been marked by internal purges. After assuming power in 2011, Kim Jong Un oversaw the execution of his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, in 2013 on charges of anti-party and counter-revolutionary activities.

His half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, was assassinated in 2017 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport using VX nerve agent — an incident that drew global condemnation.
Nuclear Legacy and Global Stakes
Any succession carries global implications, given North Korea’s expanding weapons programme. The country is estimated to possess around 50 nuclear warheads and sufficient fissile material for dozens more. In recent years, Pyongyang has accelerated ballistic missile testing and continued to strengthen its nuclear posture.
With Kim Ju Ae’s increasing public appearances and Kim Yo Jong’s entrenched political power, observers believe that while an official designation of heir may not immediately shift control, it could shape the long-term trajectory of leadership in one of the world’s most secretive nuclear-armed states.
