What Union Budget 2026 Means for Middle-Class Savings and Household Expenses
New Delhi: The Union Budget 2026, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, may not have brought immediate cheer for the average middle-class salaried taxpayer, as no changes were announced in income tax slabs or standard deductions. However, a closer reading of the Budget reveals several measures that could support long-term growth prospects for the middle class and small investors, even as the government maintains policy continuity in taxation.
No Change in Income Tax Slabs
In line with expectations of stability, the Budget has retained the existing income tax structure. Annual income up to ₹12 lakh remains tax-free, and with the standard deduction of ₹75,000, the effective tax-free income threshold stands at ₹12.75 lakh. No additional relief or restructuring of slabs has been announced for salaried individuals this year.

Tax Rationalisation and Compliance Relief
While direct tax relief is absent, the government has focused on easing compliance and lowering the burden on overseas remittances. The Budget proposes a significant reduction in Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on overseas tour programme packages to 2 per cent, down from the earlier rates of 5 per cent and 20 per cent.

Similarly, TCS under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) for education and medical purposes has been reduced from 5 per cent to 2 per cent, offering relief to families supporting students and medical needs abroad. These measures aim to improve the taxpayer experience while safeguarding long-term household savings.
Relief Through Cheaper Medicines and Consumer Goods
The Budget has announced customs duty exemptions on 17 essential cancer drugs, making treatment more affordable for patients. In addition, duty-free personal imports will be permitted for medicines used to treat seven other rare diseases.
Several consumer products are also set to become cheaper due to duty exemptions on key components. These include items used in the manufacture of microwave ovens, television equipment, leather goods, and footwear, which could ease cost pressures on middle-class households.

Focus on Job Creation and Growth
To support employment generation, the government has raised capital expenditure to over ₹12 lakh crore, with major allocations for infrastructure, railways, tourism, logistics and technology sectors. These investments are expected to create new jobs and stimulate economic activity, indirectly benefiting the middle class through income and employment opportunities.
Overall, while Budget 2026 may have disappointed those hoping for immediate tax relief, it places emphasis on affordability, compliance ease and growth-led opportunities, offering the middle class potential long-term gains rather than short-term concessions.
