NCERT Committee Recommends Renaming ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’ in School Textbooks
A high-level committee appointed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed significant changes to India’s school curriculum. The committee recommends replacing the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in school textbooks and introducing ‘classical history’ instead of ‘ancient history’ in the curriculum.
Historical Significance of ‘Bharat’
The unanimous recommendation, part of the committee’s final position paper on Social Sciences, aims to emphasize the historical significance of ‘Bharat.’ According to committee chairperson CI Issac, the use of the name ‘Bharat’ dates back to ancient texts like the Vishnu Purana, which is approximately 7,000 years old. The term ‘India’ became common only after the establishment of the East India Company in 1757.
Introducing ‘Classical History’
The committee further recommends replacing ‘ancient history’ with ‘classical history’ in textbooks. This change is motivated by the desire to recognize India’s historical achievements and contributions, including Aryabhatta’s work on the solar system model. The traditional division of Indian history into ancient, medieval, and modern phases often overlooks these accomplishments.
Highlighting ‘Hindu Victories’
To provide a balanced perspective, the committee suggests highlighting “Hindu victories” in textbooks. While the failures of the past are mentioned, the victories over the Mughals and Sultans are often overlooked. This balanced approach aims to offer a more comprehensive view of India’s history.
Introduction of Indian Knowledge System (IKS)
The committee also proposes introducing the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum of all subjects. This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and reflects a commitment to holistic and culturally rooted education.
The NCERT’s revision of school textbooks is an effort to adapt to the changing educational landscape in line with the NEP 2020. The 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) has been tasked with finalizing the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for school classes. These recommendations reflect a broader effort to embrace India’s rich historical and cultural heritage in the education system.
