Indictment and Serious Charges: Imran Khan Charged with Leaking Classified Documents While in Custody
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated, was officially charged with leaking classified documents on Monday. The indictment took place outside Adiala Jail, where Khan is being held, with Shah Khawar, a prosecutor from Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, making the announcement. Imran Khan had previously been jailed in August for a three-year term on graft charges. However, his sentence was subsequently overturned, and he was instead kept in custody on a far more serious charge related to the sharing of state documents.
The Controversial Case
The case centers around a cable that Khan had claimed to be evidence that his ousting was part of a US conspiracy supported by the influential military establishment in Pakistan, according to a report by the government’s Federal Investigation Agency. Both the United States and the Pakistan military have denied these allegations. Furthermore, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Vice Chairman of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and a former foreign minister, has also been indicted in connection with the case.
Maximum Jail Term
Imran Khan’s legal team has stated that the charges in this case carry a maximum jail term of 14 years.
