The Indian government has given its approval for the construction of 65 bridges in the region of Jammu & Kashmir as part of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a program aimed at enhancing rural road connectivity that was launched in the year 2000.
The decision to move forward with the construction of these bridges was made during a meeting of the empowered committee under the Union Ministry of Rural Development. This meeting, which took place on September 5, 2023, was convened to discuss the project proposals for bridges submitted by the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir under the PMGSY-III for the fiscal year 2023-24.
Kashmirs Local Bodies Prepare for Transition as Terms Near End
A record of the meeting stated, “Subject to compliance with the observations and recommendations, the empowered committee has granted its approval for the project put forth by Jammu & Kashmir.” The Road Connectivity Division of the Union Rural Development Ministry transmitted the record of this meeting to the relevant authorities on October 4, 2023.
The proposed construction of these 65 bridges comes with an estimated financial outlay of Rs 367.56 crore. Of this total amount, Rs 330.80 crore is allocated as the central share, while the Union Territory will contribute Rs 36.75 crore towards the project.Under the PMGSY-III, Jammu & Kashmir had been assigned a target road length of 1750 kilometers.
A substantial portion of this allocation, specifically 1672 kilometers, had already been sanctioned earlier in the same year. The proposal for the construction of these 65 bridges, totaling a length of 3625.80 meters, falls within the remaining allocation designated for the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir under the PMGSY-III initiative.
