Supreme Court Mandates Rs 30 Lakh Compensation for Sewer Deaths, Rs 20 Lakh for Disabilities
Compensation for Sewer Deaths
In response to the grave issue of sewer deaths in India, the Supreme Court has issued a significant ruling. The court has ordered government authorities to pay compensation of Rs 30 lakh to the families of those who lose their lives while cleaning sewers. Additionally, those who suffer permanent disabilities during sewer cleaning will receive a minimum compensation of Rs 20 lakh. In cases where cleaners experience other disabilities, authorities must provide up to Rs 10 lakh in compensation.
Eradicating Manual Scavenging
The Supreme Court emphasized the need for the complete eradication of manual scavenging. It placed the responsibility on both Union and state governments to ensure this practice is eliminated entirely. To prevent such incidents, the court directed government agencies to coordinate their efforts and took the step of allowing High Courts to monitor cases related to sewer deaths.
