Azam Khan Reacts to Seven-Year Jail Sentence: “Difference Between Verdict and Justice”
Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatima, and son Abdullah Azam Khan were handed seven-year jail sentences by a Rampur court in a case related to fake birth certificates. In response to the verdict, Azam Khan expressed his belief that there was a distinction between a verdict and justice.
The trio was convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including fraud, forging documents, using forged documents for cheating, using forged documents as genuine, and criminal conspiracy. Prior to this judgment, they had been out on bail.
Fake Birth Certificates Scandal
The case pertains to allegations that Khan and his family obtained two fake birth certificates, with varying birthdates, from Lucknow and Rampur. The charge sheet revealed that Abdullah Azam’s date of birth was listed as January 1, 1993, on the Rampur document, while the Lucknow document indicated a birthdate of September 30, 1990. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation-issued certificate was allegedly used by Abdullah Azam during the 2017 assembly elections, despite not meeting the age requirement of 25. He had won the 2022 assembly elections but was later disqualified due to a 2008 conviction.
Following his conviction in the 2008 case, Khan moved the Supreme Court to challenge an Allahabad High Court order that refused to stay his conviction. He intends to persist in his pursuit of truth and justice despite the legal setbacks.
Triumph of Justice
In contrast, BJP lawmaker Akash Saxena, who had filed the FIR that led to this case, viewed the verdict as a “triumph of justice.” He expressed his determination to continue advocating for truth and justice in the future.
