Unseasonal Snowfall Blankets Kashmir; Unexpected Winter Arrives Early
Health resorts and high-altitude areas in Kashmir have witnessed an unseasonal snowfall, indicating the early onset of winter in the region. As cold winds grip the valley, temperatures have dropped several degrees below normal. This sudden snowfall has resulted in blocked roads, and efforts are underway to clear the snow to restore traffic.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the crucial link connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country, remained closed for over 14 hours due to landslides. Snowfall also led to the closure of the Mughal Road and affected the Zojila Pass along the Srinagar-Ladakh Highway. Snow-clearing machinery is working to ensure safe passage on these important routes.
The famous health resorts of Gulmarg and Sonmarg have also been blanketed in snow, with approximately half a foot accumulating in Sonmarg. This sudden change in weather conditions is impacting farmers who are currently in the middle of the harvesting season.
Woolens and heating gadgets have made an early comeback to cope with the unusual October cold. According to the meteorological department, the weather is expected to improve by the evening, providing some respite from the untimely winter.
