    Key Highlights:

    • 1,826 seasonal centers serve 31,658 nomadic children in J&K.
    • Centers provide education during six-month migration periods.
    • Seasonal volunteers and resources ensure uninterrupted learning.

The Directorate of Samagra Shiksha in Jammu and Kashmir operates 1,826 seasonal centers across the highland pastures to ensure educational opportunities for 31,658 nomadic children. These children, from migratory communities, continue their education during the migration season, which lasts up to six months, from May to October.

Seasonal Educational Volunteers (EVs) work in these temporary schools, ensuring consistent education. With migratory families moving between divisions, the need for flexible educational structures is essential. Each seasonal center offers basic educational services to children aged 6 to 14 years, whether they are already enrolled in regular schools or not.

In Kashmir division, districts such as Anantnag, Ganderbal, Budgam, and Kulgam operate several centers, accommodating thousands of students. Anantnag leads with 187 centers serving 2,579 students, while Kulgam hosts 98 centers with over 3,200 students. In Jammu division, Reasi and Poonch have the highest number of centers, with 313 and 272 respectively.

The Indian Ministry of Education provides funds for resources, including teaching materials, honorariums for volunteers, tents, and solar lights. Upon the nomadic communities’ return from the pastures, children re-enroll in their local schools.

This initiative ensures that despite the challenges of migration, nomadic children can access essential educational resources and continue their learning uninterrupted during the seasonal shifts in Jammu and Kashmir.
