A Delhi court on Tuesday granted interim bail to Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid until October 2 in a terror funding case. Rashid, who represents Baramulla in the Lok Sabha after defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 elections, had requested bail to campaign in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.
Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh granted the interim relief to Rashid. On July 5, the court had previously allowed Rashid custody parole to take the oath as a member of the Lok Sabha.
Rashid has been imprisoned since 2019 after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with a 2017 terror funding investigation. He is currently held in Tihar jail.
His name surfaced during the NIA’s investigation into Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested for allegedly funding terrorist organizations and separatist groups in the Kashmir Valley.
The NIA’s charge sheet implicated several prominent figures, including separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.
Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 after he pleaded guilty to charges related to the case.
Meanwhile, the court is expected to deliver its decision on Rashid’s regular bail application tomorrow.
