Jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has applied to become the next Chancellor of Oxford University, his party announced on Monday. The application was formally submitted through Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, spokesperson for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as revealed on social media platform X.
The PTI described Khan as “Pakistan’s national hero,” highlighting his role as PTI founder, a cricket legend, philanthropist, and Oxford alumnus.
Despite his imprisonment for over a year on charges including corruption and inciting violence, Khan remains dedicated to his principles, according to his party.
The application comes in the wake of Chris Patten’s decision to step down as Oxford’s Chancellor in February. The university will not release the list of candidates until October, with voting scheduled for the end of that month.
Khan graduated from Oxford in 1975 with a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics. He gained fame as a cricket player and became a prominent figure in British media. His personal life included three marriages, one to British socialite Jemima Goldsmith.
Khan served as Chancellor of the University of Bradford from 2005 to 2014 before transitioning to politics and philanthropy, ultimately becoming Pakistan’s Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022.
Ousted from office in 2022 after a vote of no confidence, Khan has since led a significant comeback campaign, criticizing Pakistan’s military. His imprisonment, which began in August of the previous year, has been labeled by him as politically motivated.
