Twin Earthquakes Rock Japan’s Kyushu Island, Tsunami Advisory Issued
Key Highlights:
- Two powerful earthquakes, 6.9 and 7.1 magnitude, struck off Kyushu Island.
- Japan Meteorological Agency issues tsunami advisory for southern coast.
- Nuclear plants on alert; damage assessments underway.
Two powerful earthquakes shook Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on Thursday, triggering a tsunami advisory and sending shockwaves through the region.
The first quake, recorded at a magnitude of 6.9, was quickly followed by a more intense 7.1-magnitude tremor, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quakes were centered off the eastern coast of Kyushu, at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).
In response to the seismic activity, the agency issued a tsunami advisory, warning of potential waves up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) high along the southern coastline of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku.
Authorities swiftly responded to the threat, with operators of nuclear power plants on Kyushu and Shikoku conducting thorough inspections to assess any possible damage.
Japan, known for its rigorous safety protocols, has a history of taking swift action to protect its population in the wake of seismic events.
NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, reported that there were instances of broken windows at Miyazaki Airport, located near the epicenter of the quakes.
No major injuries or casualties have been reported so far, but the situation remains under close observation as authorities continue to evaluate the full extent of the damage.
Japan’s location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a highly active seismic zone, makes it one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. This latest event serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
Earlier this year, a New Year’s Day earthquake in Japan’s north-central Noto region claimed over 240 lives, underscoring the ever-present risk posed by these natural phenomena.
