Heavy rains wreaked havoc across the Jammu region on Wednesday, leading to the tragic death of a 60-year-old woman and the destruction of several structures. The deceased, Kako Devi, was buried alive alongside her two cows when her mud-house collapsed due to the intense downpour in Gundha village of Khawas, Rajouri district, during the early morning hours. Rescuers later recovered her body from the debris.

In Kathua district, a cloudburst resulted in the destruction of at least eight residential structures in Doonga village. Fortunately, no casualties were reported from this incident.

The heavy rains, which began around 9:30 a.m. and continued for over three hours, caused significant disruption in Jammu city, leading to severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas.

Major roads, including those at Dogra Chowk, Canal Road, Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Gorkha Colony, and Sanjay Nagar, were inundated, resulting in slow traffic and considerable hardships for commuters. Many residents and shopkeepers in these areas found their homes and businesses flooded.

Additionally, the downpour caused a rise in water levels in the Tawi River and other local water bodies. However, officials confirmed that there was no immediate threat of flooding.

The local Meteorological Department reported that Rajouri district recorded the highest rainfall at 74 mm over 24 hours ending at 11 a.m., followed by Jammu at 48.5 mm and Ramban at 17.5 mm.

The forecast predicts continued wet weather across the Jammu division until August 15, with the possibility of intense showers, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
